The first atlas of seabirds and cetaceans in the Bay of Biscay (a gulf of the northeast Atlantic Ocean located along the western coast of France) was published in 2009 (Castège & Hémery 2009). It was based on standardized oceanographic monitoring carried out by vessels between 1976 and 2002 across the Bay of Biscay. This book presented the spatial distribution of 36 species of seabirds and major cetacean species. Beyond the distribution data specific to each species, areas of biodiversity concentration were highlighted which allowed the definition of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

A decade later, a review was needed to assess the relevance of the MPAs created as well as the evolution of these species with high conservation stakes in the context of climate change. Since the publication of the previous work, nearly 40,000 new records have been processed according to the same protocol for about 100 species recorded between 2003 and 2015, distributed over the twelve months of the year.

This book is aimed at a broad audience of naturalists and anyone interested in marine ecosystems. It should also be used to respond to requests from managers for conservation, management of top predators and application of national and community texts (Marine Protected Areas, Marine Strategy Framework Directive, etc.).

The New Aquitaine coastline appears as a key region to measure the development of these species thanks to the importance of these sectors to the top predators of this territory, such as the Capbreton and Cap Ferret canyons, the Arcachon basin or the estuary of the Gironde. All these areas are well known for contributing to the feeding, breeding or resting of birds and marine mammals. Taking into account climate change as a pressure affecting species has become essential, especially for endangered species.

Le premier atlas des oiseaux marins et cétacés du golfe de Gascogne a été publié en 2009 (Castège & Hémery 2009). Il se basait sur les suivis océanographiques standardisés effectués par navires entre 1976 et 2002 à l’échelle du golfe de Gascogne. Cet ouvrage présentait la répartition spatiale de 36 espèces d’oiseaux marins et des principales espèces de cétacés. Au-delà des données de répartition propre à chaque espèce, des zones de concentration de biodiversité ont été mises en évidence et ont permis la définition des aires marines protégées (AMP).

Une décennie plus tard, un bilan était nécessaire pour évaluer la pertinence des AMP créées ainsi que l’évolution de ces espèces à forts enjeux de conservation dans un contexte de changements climatiques. Depuis la publication de l’ouvrage précédent, près de 40?000 nouveaux relevés ont été traités suivant le même protocole pour une centaine d’espèces recensées entre 2003 et 2015, répartis sur les douze mois de l’année.

Cet ouvrage s’adresse au plus grand nombre, aux naturalistes et à quiconque s’intéresse aux écosystèmes marins. Il doit également servir à répondre aux demandes des gestionnaires en matière de conservation, de gestion des prédateurs supérieurs et d’application des textes nationaux et communautaires (aires marines protégées, directive cadre Stratégie pour le milieu marin, etc.).

Le littoral de Nouvelle-Aquitaine apparaît comme une région clé pour mesurer les évolutions de ces espèces grâce aux secteurs d’importance pour les prédateurs supérieurs de son territoire, tels les canyons de Capbreton et du cap Ferret, le bassin d’Arcachon ou encore l’estuaire de la Gironde. Toutes ces zones sont bien connues pour contribuer à l’alimentation, à la reproduction ou au repos des oiseaux et mammifères marins. La prise en compte des changements climatiques dans les pressions qui agissent sur les espèces est devenue essentielle, d’autant plus pour des espèces menacées.
